Consultation on a Trade Association
for Community Development Finance Institutions

Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs) have an important part to play in the regeneration of deprived communities. However, in the UK the number of CDFIs is still small and they need to raise their profile and engage in a continuous process of quality improvement. To accomplish this, CDFIs need a strong trade association, capable of representing them to government, investors and other stakeholders. A trade association will also offer numerous member benefits and ensure that good practice is both transmitted and monitored across the sector.

A consultation document on the creation of a trade association was launched at the end of May 2001. This document set out the way in which a trade association might be established and sought consultation on key points:

Feedback on this consultation document has now been received and analysed. It gives a clear mandate to set up the trade association, although it also highlighted a few key issues on CDFI definition, membership criteria and governance that need to be debated further before a final business plan is completed. The aim is still to launch the trade association by the end of 2001, with services being provided for CDFIs by the start of 2002.
