| ENTERPRISING COMMUNITIES: WEALTH BEYOND WELFARE |
Micro-enterprise
In 1996, with the support of a small loan from the Glasgow Regeneration Fund, Louise Brown and Russell McEwan began trading as Left and Right Video Productions in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. Over the next three years, Louise and Russell steadily built up their business and client base, specialising in the visual performing arts and corporate promotional work.
Despite this success and armed with the latest technical skills and experience of running their own business, Louise and Russell still faced difficulty in attracting investment from the banking sector. So, having repaid their first loan in full, they came back to the GRF in 1999 for a second loan to buy some necessary digital equipment. Since this second loan, business has boomed as Left and Right Video have broadened their target market, and built on their reputation of meeting customer requirements and providing consistently high quality videos.

The Glasgow Regeneration Fund (GRF) provides business loans to individuals and small businesses in the disadvantaged areas of Glasgow who have difficulty accessing finance from mainstream sources.
GRF and the company which operates it, 'Developing Strathclyde Ltd,' were set up in 1993 in response to research identifying lack of access to finance as a barrier to enterprise development and ultimately job creation in the disadvantaged areas of Glasgow, known as the Regeneration Areas.
Lending started in 1994, and to date over £2.7 million has been invested in 315 new and existing businesses in the Regeneration areas of Glasgow. Historically, 50% of GRF's clients have been new businesses and 50% have been expansions or rescues of existing businesses.
